Creating Space for Meaningful Dialogue: Reflections from San Francisco and SXSW

Over the past few weeks, our team at inKind has had the opportunity to participate in two distinct conversations—each in a different setting, but both centered around one of the most urgent challenges facing our communities today: gun violence.

In San Francisco, we joined GIFFORDS for their annual Celebration of Courage. The evening brought together leaders, advocates, and community members committed to advancing thoughtful solutions. As part of the program, Johann Moonesinghe moderated a discussion featuring Steve Kerr, Lesley Hu, and Emma Brown, alongside powerful remarks from Gabby Giffords and Nancy Pelosi. It was a meaningful reminder of both the urgency of this work and the resilience driving it forward.

It is necessary to choose a visual aid that is appropriate for the topic and audience.
Just days later during SXSW, we hosted a more intimate gathering in Austin in partnership with GIFFORDS and the team behind Louder Than Guns, a film by Ketch Secor and David Greene that explores the human impact of gun violence through a distinctly American lens.

The evening included a private screening followed by dinner and a moderated conversation focused on where we go from here.

Across both moments, what stood out most was the importance of creating space—for listening, for dialogue, and for perspectives that don’t always share the same room.
At inKind, we spend a great deal of time thinking about the role businesses can play in shaping stronger, more connected communities. Restaurants, in particular, sit at the center of that dynamic. They are places where people gather, where conversations unfold, and where ideas can be shared in a way that feels both natural and meaningful.

These gatherings were not about having all the answers. They were about creating the conditions for more thoughtful, constructive dialogue—and recognizing that progress often begins there.

We’re grateful to our partners at GIFFORDS, the filmmakers behind Louder Than Guns, and everyone who joined us in both San Francisco and Austin. And we remain committed to supporting spaces and conversations that move this work forward in meaningful ways.
